Recounts of Active Week:
Dylan Quinlan – Dodgeball
On the 12th of June we played our dodgeball league as a team event. Our team Grey Greyhounds won our first round handy vs Yellow Bellies, then went on to win it out after beating the Black Panthers 2-0 in the final.
Before the dodgeball we played the basketball tournament for the fourth, fifth and sixth class. We, the Grey Greyhounds played White Ghosts in the first round it was a hard game and it went to a free shot tiebreak but the white Ghosts came out on top. They went on to beat the Black Panthers in the semi final, and theYellow Bellies in the final.
Grey Greyhounds#1
Black Panters#2
Blue Skies#3
Zac Quinlan – Spikeball League
This year during our Active Week our teachers held a spikeball league. I was on Black Panthers. Fortunately we won the league. In our first game we played Green Goblins and got an easy win. In our second game we played Blue Skies, we lost our first game but then made a comeback and won the next two, cheers filled the hall with excitement, we were in the final.
In the final we played yellow bellies they won the first game and we won the second. It was the last game and the score was 1-1 whoever won this won the league. It was a very close game as it came to 15-15 and we kept going one point for us one point for them. Then we got serve we were winning at this stage 21-20 all silence filled the room as Adam was taking serve. He hit it over the net and it bounced down straight on to the floor. We all started jumping and cheering.
We got nine points for our team, OLAY OLAY OLAY OLAYYYYYYY we chanted as we jumped and cheered.

The Cycle around Cloone
On the 14th June, 70 of the boys in the school went on a cycle around Cloone. In my opinion the cycle was very fun! Luckily no boys were hurt in the process. The cycle was 5km long but all the boys finished strong and didn’t get off and walk! Even the smaller boys finished strong.
There were three guards cycling with the boys making sure everyone got back safe. There were a lot of hills around clone that were very fun to go down and there were a few parents cheering the boys on. Afterwards one of the guards gave us a talk about cycling safety.
The cycle for me was nice and relaxing. I was cycling around Cloone with Luke Murray.
Sports Day
My favourite event was the relay race – even though I didn’t do very well I still enjoyed it. This year the sheer determination the boys put in to get to the top and win points for their team was extraordinary. I was on team Tipp Toppers and even though we didn’t get 1st, 2nd or 3rd I still enjoyed sports day. And at the end I was lucky enough to get an ice cream!
I think the Grey Greyhounds put in extreme effort and they deserved to win!
Active week
Active week was very enjoyable. I even won some points for kicking the football over the bar because I came 3rd. The event I liked the most in Active week was kicking over the bar. Our team Tipp Toppers tried our best but didn’t get enough points to get the top three places we still enjoyed the week and congratulated the other teams.
Hurling County Final
Daniel McAllister was my man of the match as he scored a goal followed by Jamie Ormond and David Kinnane. David made some great saves and stayed calm through out the whole match and was probably the most layed back player on the field.
The Park Run
The park run was 2.2Km and after practising every day by running about 11 – 16 laps per day, we were more than ready to run the park. All the classes 1st to 6th ran around the park and all finished quite strong.
The Walk
The students that couldn’t ride a bike or didn’t have one all went on a walk around the whole park in Templemore and got back after the boys who cycled and they all got back safe and sound.
Tom Corcoran – Draughts League
We started our draughts league roughly two weeks before Active Week.
I won my first game against last years runner-up Dylan two nothing. Then I played Oscar in my second game and had to wait a long time to play the winner of Adam and Dale in the quarter final. My fellow Black Panther Adam came out on top, but I ended his dreams when I beat him two nil. I beat in form James Martin in the semi-final. Me and Paul got time off school-work to play our draughts final on Thursday last. I retained my class draughts title with a two nil victory over Paul.
I went on to play in the 4th, 5th and 6th draughts tournament. I played Jeffrey Myles in the semi final. It was best of one. I got a lucky triple jump on Jeffrey and it was very hard for him to come back and beat me.
Next I played Eoin Collins who won in his class. Eoin was a lot better and it was a very good game. I managed to trap his king while I did damage with my other king.
I got my name put on a plaque and received a sliotar while getting 6 points for my team the Black Panthers. Eoin and Jeffrey both got sliotars and 3 points for their teams.
Stephen Tuohy – Active Week Day 1
On the first day of Active Week we did a soccer league, a basketball league, a dodgeball league and a rounders league.
The soccer league was for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class. It contained Blue Skies, Green Goblins, White Ghosts, Tipp Toppers, Grey Greyhounds, Yellow Bellies, Black Panthers and Red Devils. After some very tough games it left White Ghosts VS Blue Skies in the final. Seán Stone and Jack Duggan were arguably the star men in the game and Blue Skies came out on top 6-4 in the end which gave them 9 points and White Ghosts 6 points.
The basketball league which was for 4th, 5th and 6th class. Once again this tournament was a fantastic one and it had a great final in White Ghosts versus Yellow Bellies. White Ghosts came out on top 8-2. David Kinnane had a superb game and scored 6 of the 8 points for white ghosts with Stephen Tuohy getting the other 2.
Our Dodgeball league was also a success with Grey Greyhounds beating the Black Panthers in the final.
Our rounders league was arguably the best and most fun activity of the day with Red Devils winning and Green Goblins coming 2nd.
Overall, in my opinion it was the best day of Active Week.
Oscar Duggan – Sports Day
On Friday the 15th June it was sports day. It was the last day of Active Week. It was in the athletics track in the park we left around 9.30am. All the teams in Active Week were the Yellow Bellies, the Green Goblins, Blue Skies, the Red Devils, the Tipp Toppers, White Ghosts, Black Panthers, and the Grey Greyhounds which was my team.
The obstacle course was the first event in which my team came third the Red Devils came second and the Black Panthers came first. Our team won many events such as the sack race which Dylan won and the sprints which Roy won. The best event I did in was the 400m run but unfortunately I had to drop out near the end.
The last two team events were the tug of war and the relay the Yellow Bellies came first in the tug of war Blue Skies came second and the Grey Greyhounds came third. In the relay the Grey Greyhounds came first Blue Skies came second and the Yellow Bellies came third.
When the last two events were done, we all got our stuff and went down to see who won. We waited a few minutes for teachers to announce the winners. The winners by one point were my team, the Grey Greyhounds! My team were delighted to win. The Black Panthers came second and the Blue Skies came third.
It was a great week and a great day.
Jamie Ormond – Sponsored Cycle
This year on the 14th June a large amount of our school went on a 5km cycle. The whole school raised 2,676 euro. We were very lucky to have three guards cycling with us.
When we got on our way we had 1st class at the back and 5th and 6thclass at the front. As we were coming up to the Garda College the Guard leading us on a motor bike stopped to let the 1st and 2nd class catch up to the rest of the group. We then went past the train station and as we past Railway View we saw loads of parents standing outside their homes cheering us on.
We then arrived at the school and had an apple, orange, a rice crispy bun and a small bottle of water. After we had small bit to eat we went into the hall to have a bike safety talk presented by one of the guards, Gd. Orla Clarke.
After that 4th,5th and 6th did the slow bike race while 1st,2nd and 3rd did the welly toss. When we were all finished we went inside and packed up and went home.
David Prout – Sports Day 2018
We were in the athletic track for sports day which occurred on 15th June. The school was split into eight teams, the teams were the Red Devils, Yellow Bellies, Grey Greyhounds, Black Panthers, Blue Skies, Tipp Toppers, Green Goblins and White Ghosts. I was on the Yellow Bellies.
The first event of the day was a team event which was the obstacle course there was 2 heats in the event the top 2 from each heat went through to the final. My team came last meaning we didn’t go through. The winners of the final heat, racking up 9 points, were the Black Panthers. In second were the Red Devils who earned 6 points and in third place earning 3 points were the Grey Greyhounds.
My favourite team event, which was also the second last team event, was the Tug of War. In the Semi-Final we played the Green Goblins who we beat easily. In the Final we played the Blue Skies who put up a good fight but we still won .This meant that the Yellow Bellies came first earning 9 points and in second were the Blue Skies who earned 6 points and in third place, earning 3 points, were the Grey Greyhounds.
The relay race was the last team event where everyone on the team has to sprint around 100m with a baton and then return it to your next team member. The winners were the Grey Greyhounds and in second were Blue Skies and in third the Yellow Bellies.
So the overall winners, who racked up a lot of points in other events I didn’t mention, were the Grey Greyhounds with 145 points and in second were the Black Panthers with 144 points. That just shows how close the tournament was.
Overall it was a great day and was fun for everyone.
Daniel Devanney – ACTIVE WEEK 2018
On active week more then 70 of us went for a CYCLE around Cloone. We all started strong and finished stronger. We were all made wear a hi-vis vest and helmets.
0n Friday we had sports day. There were 8 teams 4 and 4 on each side. My favourite activity was 400metter sprint. Fifth went the whole way around the athletics track.
For the Park Run, 4th to 6th class ran 2.2km and 1 to 3 ran 1.1km
Cormac Bourke – Active Week
Active week took place in St.Colmcille’s PS this year. The teams were Tipp Toppers, Green Goblins, Black Panthers, Grey Greyhounds, White Ghosts, Red Devils, Yellow Bellies and Blue Skies.
My Favourite event was the basketball tournament we won the first round against Blue skies it was a intense game as it went to tiebreak but green goblins came out on top ,but we lost to the runners up Yellow Bellies, then we lost the 3rd place play off.
The event that we came closest to winning was the rounders, we won every match except the final we lost 5-4 but the Red devils had two more minutes so we knew we weren’t going to win.
The winners were Grey Greyhounds and we came fourth but it just wasn’t our week.
Luke Murray – Sportsday
On the 15th June 2018 St. Colmcille’s up to the town athletics track for our sports day.
We kicked of the day by doing a obstacle course. The black panthers came first, red devils came second and the grey hounds came third.
Then we did the sprint. I came first, Paul sage came second and Shane Monaghan third. We also did a sac race.
At the end of the day we got ice-cream. It was a lovely day.
Adam Tynan O’Connor – The Cycle Around Cloone
On the 14th June over 70 students cycled the 5km cycle around Cloone where thankfully not a single student was hurt.
When the cycle began many students were grouped up together but as we progressed we got more spread out. The cycle took roughly 30 minutes and with the help of three guards we made it around safely
ALL in all I enjoyed the cycle and I am looking forward to next year.
Mikey Fogarty – Cycle
On the 14th June St. Colmcille’s had our sponsored cycle around Cloone. At 13.30 we left for our cycle.
We went slowly at first until we were past Polly’s pub. When we were around the bridge we were having a lot of fun. When we got back there were water and rice crispies buns and fruit.
When we were all back we went into the hall and got a talk about bike safety from one of the guards called Orla Clark.
When we got out of the hall, the people who walked were sitting outside waiting for us.
