St.Colmcille’s left the school at quarter to twelve to be greeted by Gaelscoil at the park gates as we waited for Aidan Doyle to arrive with the keys. Finally Aidan arrived and unlocked the gates. Mr.Kelly, Mr.Healy and Mr.Doyle named out the team and before we knew it we were out on the pitch warming up. Patrick Moloney was our captain and went up for the toss. Mr.Kelly got us geared up and we left the huddle and took our positions on the pitch.
The ball was thrown in and St.Colmcille’s got off to a bright start but kicked two wides. Then Gaelscoil went up the pitch and scored a point. St.Colmcille’s soon settled into their momentum and started to dominate the match with James Corcoran kicking two frees with his left foot. A high ball was dropped in on Ciarán McCormack who punched it to the net. The Gaelscoil goalie kicked out the ball and John Campion won the ball on the 45 and kicked a massive point. The half wore on and James Corcoran, Killian Fennell and John Campion each kicked some vital scores. The referee blew the half time whistle. St.Colmcille’s 1-6 Gaelscoil 2 points.
The second half started and Gaelscoil applied some pressure but St.Colmcille’s stood tall and never let them in. Gaelscoil won one or two frees and dropped them into the square but St.Colmcille’s weathered the storm and worked the ball up the field and Conor Cadell blasted the ball over bar. James Kennedy kicked a lovely point followed by another point by John Campion. James Corcoran kept knocking over the frees as well as one from play. Patrick Moloney, Eoin Quinn, Jack Nevin, Luke Ormond and Kevin Sheedy kept busting out of the defence with the ball and supplying it to the forwards which they made good use of. Stephen Cahill was as steady as a rock leaving goalkeeper Shane Sweeney with nothing to do for the second match in a row.
It ended up as a good win for St.Colmcille’s but there are more things to come. 1-11 to 3 points in favour of St.Colmcilles and they are well on their way to retaining the title.
