When the boys in sixth class heard that the school faced a bill for almost €300 for a bus to Ballincollig for the Spikeball Munster Finals, they decided to help by hosting a car wash. With the help of their teacher Mr.Doyle, the boys planned the event and even went as far as a practice run on Thursday when they washed Mrs. Quaid’s car.

On Friday morning the first car arrived for washing even before school opened! This was a sign of things to come. Nobody could have imagined such a busy day was in store. Cars just kept arriving. At any one time, three teams of boys worked their wet socks off, scrubbing, rinsing and scrubbing some more.

By the 11 o’clock break the target of €300 had incredibly already been reached. However the boys were only getting going. More cars arrived, more scrubbing was required and more donations were generously handed over.

As the final car was washed at 2pm, the boys were wet, tired and hungry. However they never faltered. Their determination, teamwork and enthusiasm was simply inspiring. In total over €840 has been raised for the school. This money will cover the cost of the bus to the Munster finals but will also go along way to paying for buses to the upcoming hurling and soccer tournaments.

As a reward for their work it has been decided that the whole class will be brought to Cork on Tuesday. We look forward to a great day. Who knows, perhaps we will need a bus for an All-Ireland spikeball final?

Sincere thanks to all the boys in sixth class, to the teachers and staff who helped throughout the day and especially to all those who donated to the cause.
