At 9:30 we headed off to Peake Villa soccer grounds to compete in the annual 5 a-side soccer blitz. We were the first team there which meant we got a decent warm up. When we played our first match Mr. Doyle told us the starting line up. Chris Morrissey in goal, Sean Collier as defender, Ciaran McCormack and Luke Ormond in midfield which left Ciaran Barry as striker. The subs were Kevin Allen, Mikey Delaney and Brian Quinn. We got off to a slow start but got 3 goals in the second half thanks to Luke, Brian and Ciaran McCormack and that game was against Holycross B.

In the next game we played Roscrea with the same starting line up. This time we got off to a great start with Luke getting two goals in the second half. Brian got a third goal for a second 3-0 victory.

In our next match we knew we were up against it. We played Cloughjordan with again the same line up. Ciaran McCormack got a goal just before half time but two Cloughjordan goals, one coming from what we felt was a bad decision by the referee meant we ended up losing 2-1. We were heart broken. We all thought it was over but then the officials came over and told us that as the other games were going our way, St.Colmcilles still had a chance.

So we watched the game between Roscrea and Cloughjordan. Roscrea were winning 2-1 when Cloughjordan’s attack went out of play but the ref waved to play on. Cloughjordan scored and it finished 2-2. That meant it was over for St.Colmcille’s.

We still had one match to play against Upperchurch B who we knew were not very strong. Mr.Doyle made a few changes with Brian replacing Sean and myself replacing Luke and Kevin replacing Ciaran Barry. We ended up winning 10-1. We felt we were unlucky but it was a very enjoyable day.

On the 13th of April, sixteen boys from 5th and 6th class set off to Peake Villa in Thurles to play in a 5 a side soccer tournament.

We arrived at 10:00am. We changed into our gear and got ready for our first match. There were two teams, the A team with Ciaran Barry, Christopher Morrissey, Sean Collier, Ciaran McCormack, Luke Ormand, Brian Quinn, Kevin Allen and Mikey Delaney.

The B team was made up of Tom Duggan, Aidan Prout, Mikie Ryan, Edward Ryan, David Quinn, Jack Barnett, Kane Conneely and Marty Varadi.

The A team won 3-0 against Holycross B. The B team drew 2-2 against Corville B team. The A team were up next and won comfortable by a scoreline of 3-0 against Corville’s A team. The Bs played very well in their next match because they drew against Upperchurch A team 0-0.

The next match would decide if the A team got through to the county finals but they were unlucky because they lost 2-1 against Cloughjordan. A decision went against us, the ball was over the goal line and it wasn’t counted. The B team were very tired and they ended up losing their last game to Holycross A team 3-0. The A team had an easy game by beating Upperchurch B 10-1 in their last game.

We came home a bit disappointed that we didn’t get through to the county finals. Overall we had a great day playing soccer in Peake Villa.
