On Friday the 12th October our U13A football team set out for the Durlas Og pitch needing a win to progress to theCountySemi-final stages. We were defending champions and everyone was hopeful we would progress.
We arrived early and had time for a good pep talk and warm-up. We sat silently in the dressing room, waiting in anticipation to hear the starting 15. There was a mixture of emotions as the team was called but all the panel members wanted a win.
Ciarán Byrne led the team out as captain. His first task was to win the toss and play with the advantage of a stiff breeze and the slope.St.Colmcille’s were the better team in the first half and struck the woodwork on numerous occasions. Aaron Quinlan finally scored a brilliant point from his left foot to break the deadlock and leave the half time score : St.Colmcille’s 0-1 Scoil Ailbhe 0-0.
Scoil Ailbhe had the advantage in the 2nd half. The wind got stronger and they scored 2 points in quick succession. A goal followed after relentless pressure and it was looking ominous for Templemore. Ciarán Byrne replied with a pointed free but it was too little too late. The full time score was: St.Colmcille’s 0-2 Scoil Ailbhe 1-4. Scoil Ailbhe played excellently and will be difficult opponents in their next outing. Best of luck to them.
ForSt.Colmcille’s, we have relinquished our crown as county champions but here’s hoping we can reap success again in the not too distant future.
