Firstly, I would like to thank all the parents who completed our first online survey in which we asked for your opinions on Homework. Your input and feedback is valuable and welcomed. We were delighted with the number of parents who took the time to share their views with us and we now plan to use online surveys again in the future.
Here is a summary of some of the main findings:
- 80% of parents completed the survey.
- 55% of parents believe homework is Extremely Beneficial
- 2% think homework is of Little Benefit.
- Nobody thought homework was of No Benefit.
- 82% of parents believe children are getting the correct amount of homework each night.
- 16% of parents found homework Somewhat Stressful or Quite Stressful.
- The levels of pupils own motivation to do homework was very varied.
- Maths and Irish homework was considered to be the most difficult to complete.
- 73% of parents believe homework should be given 4 nights per week.
What Now?
- Firstly I would ask the 16% of parents who found homework somewhat or a little stressful to contact their son’s class teacher and discuss what can be done to reduce that stress. Homework should not be stressful and we can work together to reduce that stress.
- We are giving each family a one page help sheet which might assist parents in supporting their child with homework. Helping with Homework – Guidelines for parents
- The teaching staff have met since the survey and reviewed our homework policy. This link will direct you to it. Homework Policy
- SCP are organising ‘Help with Homework’ talks for parents which will run for 4 evenings. Ita Teehan and Michael Delaney will be in contact with you in relation to this shortly. I would strongly recommend that you attend these talks as it will give practical help with Maths, English reading, spelling and more.
- Our HSCL officer, Michael Delaney, is available to meet with you in relation to homework at any time.
