St. Colmcille’s Primary School Templemore became only the eighth school inTipperaryto be awarded an Active Flag recently. The Active Flag is awarded to schools that provide a broad and balanced PE curriculum as well as promoting participation in sport throughout the school and community. In short anActiveSchoolis a school that is physically educated as well as and physically active.
Over a two year period, St. Colmcille’s worked on self evaluating how active the school was while putting in place a number of projects to improve activity throughout the school. This culminated in the school hosting an Active Week in June where the pupils, parents and staff had a brilliant and active time cycling, playing rounders, orienteering and much, much more.
The project was led by the Active Flag Committee (pictured below). Ms. Maura Bergin, Mrs. Bernie Fogarty along with twelve pupils met regularly to set out the improvements required to be awarded the Active Flag. Each class also did projects to educate themselves on the importance of being active. Classes learned about sugar content in food, the heart, our levels of activity at home and in school as well as learning about new games we could play. These projects impressed the inspector greatly when he arrived to meet the committee and decide whether St. Colmcille’s was anActiveSchoolor not. His answer was a resounding YES!
St.Colmcille’s was delighted to welcome back one of its most promising past pupils, Colin O’Riordan to raise the Active Flag. Colin was the captain of theTipperaryminor football team this year. The flag now flies proudly outside the school, reminding everyone of the importance of being active each day. The school will continue to promote activity through the Be Active Programme where parents are invited in to work with the children to promote activity. The school also looks forward to theCountyAthleticsin two weeks time along with Soccer, Spikeball, Pitch n’ Putt, Gaelic Football, Hurling and Swimming.
Keep up the good work everyone!
