An enthralling soccer game between the staff of St.Colmcille’s and the pupils of sixth only ended after a sudden death penalty shootout.

The pupils began brightly scoring after eleven minutes only for the staff to equalise with a superb strike from a free kick by Mr. Doyle.

A soft goal from a long ball put the pupils back in front and it seemed they’d be getting full marks for their performance. The teachers corrected through a well taken goal by guest player Diarmuid Delaney!

Extra time followed with neither team able to find the net. The penalty shootout had everything you could wish for. David Kinnane in goal had little to do as Mr. Kelly and Ms. Bergin hit opposite posts. Mr. Doyle, Mr. Derby and Mr. Healy all converted their spot kicks. As for the pupils, Edvin, Daniel and Michael were successful with Mr. Healy making two saves to ensure sudden death.

Sudden death saw the pupils drive three spot kicks in a row over the bar while Ms. Fennel, Ms. Faherty and Ms. Hassett each succumbed to the pressure and missed the target. This left Niamh Keane with an opportunity to win it for the staff and she duly converted.

This is a lovely tradition which pupils and staff enjoy annually. However it is the staff again who rein supreme and the pupils left to reflect on missed chances.
